Pain in the left breast: what to know

Cyclical soreness may change before menstruation and affect one or both breasts. Pain that worsens when you move, press the ribs or lift an arm can arise from muscles or the chest wall rather than breast tissue. A blocked duct, skin irritation or infection may cause a tender, warm or reddened area. A lump, nipple change or discharge needs an examination; pain alone does not identify the cause, and breast pain is not the same as a diagnosis of cancer.

Track when the pain appears, whether it follows your cycle, and whether movement or touch changes it. A well-fitting supportive bra, avoiding repeated strain and using a simple pain-relief plan recommended by a pharmacist may help. Do not squeeze a lump or inflamed area. Book an appointment for new, focal or persistent pain, especially if you also notice a lump, skin dimpling, nipple inversion or discharge.

Seek prompt care for a hot, red, rapidly swollen breast, fever, pus-like discharge, severe pain or feeling markedly unwell. Arrange timely assessment for a new lump, bloody discharge, skin thickening, nipple inversion or pain that does not settle. Call emergency services for breast-area pain with pressure, breathlessness, sweating, nausea or pain spreading to the arm, jaw or back.
