Pain in the groin and hip area: what to know

Short answer
Pain in the groin and hip area can reflect a muscle strain, irritated hip joint, or another nearby problem, so the pattern and triggers help guide assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the pain may mean
Pain after a sudden change in sport, a twist, or forceful movement may involve the adductor muscles or tendons. Deep groin pain with turning, squatting, or prolonged sitting can occur when the hip joint is irritated. Hip impingement can cause pinching with hip flexion, while a hip labral tear may produce catching or clicking. Arthritis may cause stiffness and reduced movement, especially after rest. These patterns overlap, and groin pain does not identify one diagnosis by itself.
Notice whether the pain is sharp, aching, or burning; whether it spreads into the thigh; and whether weakness, swelling, clicking, fever, or urinary symptoms accompany it.
What you can do now
Reduce movements that clearly reproduce the pain for a short period, but keep gentle walking if it is comfortable. Avoid forceful stretching, sprinting, deep squats, and heavy lifting while symptoms are active. A wrapped cold pack may help after a recent activity-related flare; use a towel barrier and stop if the skin becomes numb. Arrange an examination if pain persists, changes your gait, or keeps returning. A clinician may assess hip movement, muscle strength, the abdomen, and the lower back before deciding whether imaging is useful.
When to seek care
Seek urgent care for severe sudden pain, inability to bear weight, a visible groin bulge that becomes very painful, fever with a hot or swollen joint, or pain after a significant injury. Prompt assessment is also sensible for new numbness, marked weakness, blood in the urine, or testicular pain or swelling. For ongoing symptoms, a physiotherapist or doctor can help identify the movement that is loading the area.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: Which structures could be causing this pattern? What movements should I temporarily modify? Do I need an examination of my hip, back, abdomen, or testicles? Which symptoms would change the urgency?

Questions people ask
Can hip pain be felt in the groin?
Yes. Irritation inside the hip joint commonly causes pain felt deep in the groin, although examination is needed to separate hip pain from muscle or abdominal causes.
Should I stretch painful groin muscles?
Do not force a painful stretch during an acute flare. Gentle, comfortable movement is usually a better starting point until the cause is clearer.
