What should you know about pain during urination after sex?

Stinging as urine touches the vulva can follow friction, small surface irritation, dryness, or a reaction to lubricant, condom material, or cleansing products. Burning deeper in the urinary passage, frequent urges, cloudy urine, or lower abdominal discomfort can fit a urinary infection. Discharge, sores, pelvic pain, or bleeding may indicate a genital infection or sexually transmitted infection. Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause may increase dryness and urinary discomfort. The symptom does not identify one diagnosis without an examination or urine testing.

Record when the pain begins, whether it occurs only as urine touches the skin, and whether urgency, frequency, fever, back pain, discharge, or sores are present.

Drink normally, rinse external skin with plain lukewarm water, and avoid fragranced products. Pause sex until the discomfort settles or you have been assessed, especially when infection is possible. Arrange a clinician visit if symptoms last, recur after sex, or occur with urgency, discharge, sores, or a new sexual partner. Testing may include a urine sample and, when appropriate, genital or sexually transmitted infection tests. Use prescribed treatment exactly as directed; do not use leftover antibiotics.

Seek urgent care for fever with urinary symptoms, pain in the side or back, vomiting, confusion, inability to pass urine, or rapidly worsening illness. Prompt assessment is also needed for blood in the urine, severe pelvic pain, pregnancy with urinary pain, or new genital ulcers. These signs can indicate an infection or another problem needing timely treatment.

Ask whether the pain sounds external or urinary, whether urine testing or sexually transmitted infection testing is needed, and whether a product or dryness may be irritating the tissue. Mention any fever, back pain, discharge, bleeding, pregnancy possibility, or recent antibiotics.
