Pain during sex and a UTI: what to know

A UTI can irritate the urethra and bladder, making pressure or friction during sex uncomfortable. Typical urinary clues include burning, needing to pass urine often, urgency, or lower abdominal discomfort. Vaginal dryness, vulvodynia, pelvic-floor tension, endometriosis, and pelvic inflammatory disease can also cause pain, sometimes alongside urinary sensations. Vaginal discharge, itching, sores, or pain deep in the pelvis may point away from a simple bladder infection. A urine assessment helps clarify the cause.

Pause sex while symptoms are active if it increases discomfort. Arrange a clinical review for urine testing, especially when symptoms are new, persistent, recurrent, or accompanied by blood in the urine. Take prescribed treatment exactly as directed and do not use leftover antibiotics. Drink normally and avoid products that irritate the vulva. Mention pregnancy possibility, fever, flank pain, vaginal symptoms, and any recent sexual-health concern because these change the assessment.

Seek prompt care for fever, chills, pain in the back or side, vomiting, blood in the urine, or symptoms that are worsening. Urgent help is appropriate if you feel faint or severely unwell, or if pregnancy is possible with significant pain. Arrange review when urinary symptoms do not settle or keep returning.
