Pain during sex sometimes: understanding an intermittent symptom

Changes in arousal, lubrication, position, depth, and pelvic-muscle tension can make pain vary between encounters. Use lubricant, slow the pace, and choose activities that do not hurt. Avoid fragranced products on the vulva. If the pattern continues, take the record to a clinician, who may examine the tissues, pelvic muscles, and pelvis and arrange targeted tests.

Make an appointment when episodes recur, become more intense, or affect your relationship or daily wellbeing. Seek prompt care for fever, unusual discharge, bleeding after sex, sores, or painful urination. Sudden severe pelvic pain, faintness, vomiting, or heavy bleeding needs urgent assessment.
