Pain During Sex With Dryness

Dryness can make sex painful because reduced moisture increases friction and can leave vaginal tissue irritated or sore. Pain may feel burning at the entrance, deeper aching, or soreness afterwards. Arousal, hormonal changes, medicines, breastfeeding, stress and irritating products can all affect comfort, so the cause is worth exploring rather than guessing.

Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause is a common explanation around and after menopause, when lower oestrogen can make vaginal tissues drier and more sensitive. Similar symptoms can occur at other life stages. Lichen Sclerosus may cause itching, soreness or fragile skin around the vulva. Vulvodynia can cause burning or pain at the vulva without an obvious visible cause. Discharge, odour, itching or urinary burning can point towards infection and need a clinical assessment.

Dryness and pain can also lead the pelvic-floor muscles to tighten protectively, creating a cycle of discomfort. A clinician can check the skin and tissues, review medicines and discuss testing or treatment.

Take more time for arousal, use a water- or silicone-based lubricant and stop if burning develops. Avoid scented washes, douching and products that sting. A vaginal moisturiser may help some people with ongoing dryness, while prescribed local hormone treatment may be suitable for others after review. Do not apply steroid or hormone products to the vulva without advice, especially if the skin is itchy, pale, cracked or changing.

Book a medical appointment if dryness persists, causes repeated pain, leads to bleeding after sex or comes with itching, sores, unusual discharge or urinary symptoms. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe pelvic pain, fever, faintness or sudden deterioration. Mention pregnancy possibility, recent antibiotics, contraception, breastfeeding and menopause symptoms because these details can change the assessment.
