Pain during sex after a yeast infection

Pain during sex after a yeast infection may be caused by lingering inflammation, irritated skin, dryness, muscle tension, or a different condition. Scratching and friction can leave the vulva tender even after discharge improves. Recurrent burning or itching should be assessed rather than assumed to be another yeast infection.

Pain at the entrance with itching, redness, or soreness may reflect irritated vulval skin. Pain with discharge, odour, sores, urinary burning, or pelvic discomfort can have another cause. A yeast infection does not explain every episode of painful sex, and repeated self-treatment can delay the correct diagnosis. Examination or testing may be needed when symptoms persist or return.

Avoid penetration while the vulva feels raw or painful. Wash gently with water, pat dry, and avoid scented soaps, wipes, douches, and tight clothing that rubs. When symptoms settle, use lubricant, take time, and stop if pain returns. Do not use repeated antifungal treatment without advice when the diagnosis is uncertain. A clinician can check for ongoing inflammation, skin disease, infection, or pelvic-floor tension.

Arrange a review for symptoms that persist after treatment, frequent recurrence, unusual odour or discharge, sores, bleeding, pelvic pain, or pain with urination. Seek prompt care for fever, severe pelvic pain, or feeling faint. These features may point to an infection or condition needing a different evaluation.

Ask whether testing can confirm yeast or identify another cause, whether the vulval skin needs treatment, and whether pelvic-floor tension may contribute. Tell the clinician which treatment you used, when symptoms changed, and whether itching, discharge, odour, sores, or urinary burning remain.
