What should you know about pain between groin and hip?

Short answer

Pain between the groin and hip can arise from a muscle or tendon strain, irritation inside the hip joint, or pain referred from nearby areas, so its cause needs to be assessed from the symptoms and examination.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

Pain between the groin and hip can arise from a muscle or tendon strain, irritation inside the hip joint, or pain referred from nearby areas, so its cause needs to be assessed from the symptoms and examination. The location alone cannot identify the cause. Notice whether it started after sport, a sudden movement, a fall, or gradually, and whether walking, turning, sitting, or bringing the knee up changes it.

What this pain may mean

A groin pain presentation can involve the adductor muscles on the inner thigh, hip flexor tendons at the front of the joint, or the hip joint itself. Pain that catches with pivoting, deep bending, or bringing the thigh across the body may occur with hip impingement or a hip labral tear. Stiffness after rest and pain with ordinary walking can occur with hip osteoarthritis. A recent increase in running, kicking, lifting, or change of training surface can overload soft tissues even without a single memorable injury.

The character of the pain provides clues but is not a diagnosis. Aching after activity, local tenderness, clicking, reduced hip movement, or pain spreading into the thigh may all be relevant. A clinician may examine your hip, back, abdomen, and leg because discomfort in this region can be referred from more than one structure.

What you can do now

Reduce or pause the movement that clearly provokes the pain, especially sprinting, kicking, deep squats, and rapid direction changes. Keep gently mobile with comfortable walking if it does not worsen symptoms. During the early phase, a wrapped cold pack may ease soreness; avoid placing it directly on skin. Do not force a painful stretch or repeatedly test the painful movement.

If symptoms are not settling, return whenever activity repeatedly brings them back, or you are changing how you walk, arrange an assessment with a doctor or physiotherapist. Sports physiotherapy can help identify movement and load issues, then build a gradual strengthening and return-to-activity plan suited to your findings.

When to seek medical care

Seek urgent medical help after a significant fall or twist if you cannot bear weight, the leg looks deformed, or pain is severe and rapidly worsening. Prompt assessment is also needed for a hot, swollen joint, fever with hip or groin pain, new numbness or weakness, or unexplained groin swelling.

Book a clinical review for persistent pain, night pain, repeated catching or locking, or a noticeable loss of hip movement. Tell the clinician about urinary or abdominal symptoms, testicular or pelvic symptoms, and any recent injury, because these details can change the assessment.

Questions for your doctor or physiotherapist

Ask: Which structures could be causing this pain? Which movements should I temporarily avoid? Is an examination or imaging needed? What signs would mean I should seek urgent help? When can I safely resume running, lifting, or sport? A useful appointment record includes the starting date, triggers, pain at rest, walking tolerance, clicking or giving way, and what has helped or aggravated it.

Questions people ask

Can a muscle strain cause pain between the groin and hip?

Yes. The inner-thigh adductors and hip flexors can become overloaded after sport, lifting, or a sudden change in movement. Local tenderness and pain with resisted movement can support this possibility, but an examination is needed to distinguish it from joint or referred pain.

Should I keep exercising with this pain?

Avoid the activity that provokes the pain and keep only comfortable movement. Return to demanding exercise gradually after walking and basic movements are comfortable, or follow an individual plan from a physiotherapist.

Does groin and hip pain always come from the hip joint?

No. Muscles, tendons, the lower back, abdomen, pelvis, and other nearby structures can refer pain to this area. The pattern of symptoms and physical examination help narrow the source.
