Pain Behind the Left Breast Bone

Pain may be in breast tissue, beneath the breast, along the ribs, or deeper in the chest. Muscle strain or irritation around the ribs may worsen with movement, touch, or a deep breath. Breast pain can be linked with hormonal changes, infection, or an injury. Burning after meals may suggest reflux, while breath-related pain can involve the lining around the lungs. Location alone cannot identify the cause.

A tender, warm, swollen area or a painful lump can indicate an infection such as an abscess. Breast abscess drainage is one treatment used when a collection of pus needs to be emptied, but assessment comes first.

Stop strenuous activity and observe whether the pain changes with movement, breathing, meals, or pressure. Wear a supportive bra if breast movement aggravates symptoms, and record any lump, redness, nipple change, fever, cough, or breathlessness. Arrange a clinical assessment for new, persistent, or unexplained pain rather than repeatedly self-treating it.

Call emergency services for pressure or squeezing in the chest, pain spreading to the arm, jaw, back, or shoulder, severe breathlessness, fainting, cold sweating, or sudden weakness. Seek same-day care for fever with breast redness or swelling, rapidly worsening pain, a new painful lump, or bloody nipple discharge. Pregnancy and recent delivery lower the threshold for urgent assessment of chest pain or breathlessness.

Ask whether the pain is arising from breast tissue or the chest wall, what examination or imaging is appropriate, and which changes should prompt urgent review. Mention medicines, pregnancy possibility, recent exercise, injury, infection, and whether touch or breathing changes the pain.
