Pain behind the eyes with fever and chills

This combination can accompany influenza or dengue fever, particularly when there is headache, body ache, nausea or marked tiredness. Other infections, including pneumonia, urinary infection or kidney infection, may cause fever and chills even when the eye pain is not the main symptom. The location of pain alone cannot identify the cause. A clinician may ask about travel, insect exposure, cough, urinary symptoms, rash, vomiting and medicines.

Rest, drink small amounts often, and record your temperature and the timing of chills. Stay in a cool, comfortable room and avoid strenuous activity. Follow the label for any fever medicine and ask a pharmacist before taking it if you have liver disease, stomach bleeding risk, kidney problems, take blood thinners or could have dengue. Avoid taking leftover antibiotics. Limit close contact while fever continues and use fluids that replace lost water if vomiting or sweating is present.

Seek emergency help for confusion, fainting, trouble breathing, a stiff neck, a severe or rapidly worsening headache, repeated vomiting, unusual bleeding, or inability to keep fluids down. Get same-day medical advice for persistent fever with eye pain, a new rash, severe weakness, or recent travel to a malaria area. Sepsis is a medical emergency; rapidly worsening illness with very fast breathing, clammy skin or reduced alertness requires immediate help.

Ask whether you need testing for local infections, what symptoms should trigger urgent review, and which fever medicine is appropriate. Tell the clinician your travel history, exposure to mosquitoes, temperature readings and all medicines taken.
