Pain and discharge during ovulation: what should you know?

Ovulation pain, sometimes called mittelschmerz, may feel like a cramp or a one-sided ache in the lower abdomen. It can occur as an ovary releases an egg. Cervical mucus may become clearer, wetter, and more slippery around the same time. These changes often settle without treatment.

Pain that is intense, keeps returning outside the middle of the cycle, or comes with fever, vomiting, faintness, or foul-smelling discharge has a different pattern. Conditions such as Endometriosis or Ovarian Cysts can also cause pelvic pain, so the timing alone cannot identify the cause.

Record when the pain starts, which side is affected, how long it lasts, and what the discharge looks or smells like. Rest, gentle heat, and an over-the-counter pain medicine that is suitable for you may help. Avoid inserting products or douching, because these can irritate the vagina and make symptoms harder to interpret.

Arrange prompt medical care for severe or worsening pain, heavy bleeding, fever, repeated vomiting, dizziness, fainting, or a possible pregnancy. Book an appointment if symptoms persist, recur in a new pattern, or discharge is green, yellow, blood-stained, or strongly unpleasant.
