Pagetoid spread is a pattern seen when a pathologist examines a skin sample under a microscope. Melanoma cells may appear at different levels within the epidermis, the skin's outer layer. The phrase describes how the cells are distributed; it does not by itself tell you the complete stage or predict the outcome. A pathology report is interpreted alongside the lesion's thickness, ulceration, margins, and any evidence of spread beyond the skin.

Melanoma is a form of skin cancer that can begin in pigment-producing cells. Changes may include an enlarging or irregular pigmented spot, several colours, or a lesion that looks different from your other moles. The appearance alone cannot establish pagetoid spread; diagnosis requires professional examination and tissue assessment.

Arrange review with a dermatologist or skin-cancer team and take the complete pathology report to the appointment. Treatment commonly starts with removal of the melanoma and a margin of surrounding skin; the appropriate procedure depends on the report and the site. Your team may discuss surgical excision, other skin cancer surgery, or tumour removal surgery. Depending on the findings, a sentinel lymph node biopsy or additional imaging may be considered. More advanced disease can lead to a discussion about immunotherapy.

Seek prompt medical review for a changing, bleeding, crusting, or newly persistent pigmented lesion, especially when its border, colour, or size is changing. Contact your care team promptly after a melanoma diagnosis if the wound becomes increasingly red, swollen, hot, painful, or draining. New persistent headaches, weakness, confusion, seizures, or changes in vision need urgent assessment because they can signal a serious problem, although many causes are unrelated to melanoma.
