Paget's blood test: what you should know

Short answer

A blood test for suspected Paget’s disease can check blood cells, inflammation, liver or bone-related markers, but it cannot provide a diagnosis alone.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Small blood sample

Fasting only if instructed

What the sample may help assess

The requested tests depend on symptoms and the clinician’s concern. A result may point towards anaemia, inflammation, infection, liver changes or altered bone activity, while normal findings may not explain every symptom. Results can be influenced by medicines, recent illness, hydration and existing conditions. A blood test is interpreted with the examination and may be followed by imaging or another targeted test. Conditions such as Anaemia, Chronic Kidney Disease, Coeliac Disease or Crohn's Disease can also cause symptoms that prompt blood testing.

Preparing for the appointment

Check whether fasting is required; do not fast unless the requesting service tells you to. Tell the clinician about medicines, supplements, recent travel, fever, bleeding, bowel symptoms and long-term fatigue. After the sample, keep pressure on the puncture site as advised and drink normally unless you have been given different instructions. Ask how and when results will be communicated. The result should be reviewed as a whole rather than judged from one flagged line.

When to seek care

Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, fainting, new confusion, heavy bleeding, severe dehydration or rapidly worsening illness. Arrange medical review for persistent fever, unexplained weight change, marked tiredness, ongoing diarrhoea, night sweats or bone pain. Brucellosis, Dengue Fever and Glandular Fever can have overlapping symptoms, so recent travel, animal contact and illness timing matter.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what each test is checking, whether preparation is needed, which result requires follow-up, whether repeat sampling or imaging is planned, and how your symptoms and medical history change the interpretation.

Can one blood test confirm Paget's disease?

No. Blood findings may guide assessment, but diagnosis can require clinical review and other investigations.
