How the structures involved in Stretch Marks differ from normal

Short answer

Stretch marks usually fade and soften over time, while dermatologist-guided procedures may improve their texture and colour without removing every mark.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Soften texture and reduce contrast

How stretch marks form

Stretch marks are narrow lines or bands that can appear on the abdomen, hips, thighs, breasts, buttocks, upper arms or lower back. They may begin pink, red, purple or darker than surrounding skin and later become lighter, slightly indented lines. Rapid growth, pregnancy, muscle gain, weight change and some medicines can stretch or weaken the deeper supporting tissue.

The mark is not dirt or a surface stain, so ordinary scrubbing cannot remove it. Newer marks may respond differently from mature silvery marks. A clinician can check whether a medicine, hormonal condition or another skin problem needs attention.

Ways to improve their appearance

Moisturiser can reduce dryness and make the skin feel more comfortable, but it does not rebuild every altered fibre. Avoid aggressive rubbing and be cautious with products that promise rapid removal. A dermatologist may discuss [Microneedling](/treatments/aesthetic-procedures/microneedling/), [Fractional Laser Treatment](/treatments/laser-and-energy/fractional-laser-treatment/) or [RF Microneedling](/treatments/laser-and-energy/rf-microneedling/) to stimulate controlled skin repair and soften texture.

[Carboxytherapy](/treatments/aesthetic-procedures/carboxytherapy/) is another procedure that may be considered in selected cases. The choice depends on mark age, colour, location, skin tone, pregnancy status and tendency to form raised scars. Ask about a treatment plan, expected gradual change, downtime, pigment changes and the number of visits likely to be needed.

When to seek care

Book an assessment if marks appear suddenly without a clear stretching event, spread quickly, are broad and accompanied by easy bruising or weakness, or develop after a new medicine. Seek review for pain, bleeding, ulceration or raised scars. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or considering a prescription retinoid, confirm what is suitable before using it.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your marks are early or mature, which option fits your skin tone, how many sessions may be needed, what healing looks like, and how to protect treated skin. Discuss previous keloids, pigment changes and all medicines before a procedure.
