Cholesterol can undergo oxidation, a chemical change that may be considered when clinicians assess cardiovascular risk. A result is not a diagnosis by itself. Its meaning depends on the test method, your other lipid measurements, blood pressure, smoking history, diabetes status, family history, medicines, and symptoms.

A routine cholesterol panel commonly measures blood lipids such as total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. An oxidized cholesterol marker, where available, is a different type of information and may not be offered as part of routine care.

Ask which molecule the laboratory measured, why it was requested, and how the result changes your overall assessment. Bring the report and a list of medicines and supplements to the appointment. Do not start, stop, or change a statin based on this result alone. Your clinician may focus on established risk factors, a standard lipid profile, lifestyle measures, or prescribed treatment.
