Ovulation pain but no cervical mucus

Mucus can be less obvious when you are dehydrated, have recently had sex, use hormonal contraception, take medicines that dry secretions, or check at a different time of day. Some people also have fertile mucus that stays higher in the vagina and is not seen externally.

Pain around the middle of a cycle may reflect ovarian activity, but pelvic pain has several possible explanations. Endometriosis can present with pelvic pain, and ovarian cysts can cause pain as well. The absence of mucus does not diagnose either condition.

Note discharge on toilet paper or underwear without inserting anything into the vagina, and record whether it is dry, creamy, watery or stretchy. Add the date, pain location, bleeding, medication and contraception details. Looking across several cycles is more useful than judging one day.

If pregnancy is your goal, cervical mucus is only one fertility sign. A clinician or fertility service can discuss additional tracking options when cycles are irregular, pain is persistent, or conception is taking longer than expected. Mild pain may respond to heat and rest.

Get urgent help for severe or rapidly worsening pain, fainting, fever, heavy bleeding, persistent vomiting, shoulder-tip pain, or pain when pregnancy is possible. Seek a routine appointment when pain recurs, sex is painful, periods are very painful, or discharge becomes foul-smelling or unusual.
