Ovulation pain and discharge: what to know

Near ovulation, vaginal mucus may become clearer, wetter, and more slippery. A mild cramp or ache low in the abdomen may happen at the same time. Normal discharge should not have a strong unpleasant smell and should not usually cause marked itching, burning, or pelvic tenderness.

Yellow, green, grey, bloody, or foul-smelling discharge may point to infection or another cause rather than ordinary ovulation changes. Endometriosis and ovarian cysts can cause pelvic pain, but discharge does not diagnose either condition. Pain with discharge after sex or with a new partner should be discussed confidentially with a clinician.

Note the discharge's colour, texture, smell, and timing alongside the pain's side and duration. Wash gently with water or mild unscented products, keep the area dry, and avoid douching or scented internal products. Use barrier protection until a clinician has advised you if an infection is possible.

Arrange an appointment for persistent change, itching, burning when urinating, pain during sex, unexpected bleeding, or repeated pelvic pain. A clinician may offer an examination or swab and can recommend treatment based on the finding.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening pelvic pain, fever, fainting, heavy bleeding, repeated vomiting, or feeling very unwell. These symptoms can accompany a pelvic infection or another problem needing prompt treatment.
