What should you know about ovulation causing stomach pain?

Around the middle of a menstrual cycle, an ovary releases an egg. Some people feel a brief ache, cramp, or sharper twinge on the side of the ovary releasing the egg. Mild spotting or a sense of pelvic pressure can occur alongside it. The discomfort may settle without treatment and can switch sides from cycle to cycle.

Stomach pain is not specific to ovulation. Digestive conditions such as acid reflux, gastritis, food poisoning, or gastroenteritis can cause abdominal symptoms. Recurrent pain may also need assessment for conditions such as coeliac disease, Crohn's Disease, diverticular disease, or gallstones.

Record when the pain starts, which side it affects, how long it lasts, and whether it follows a similar pattern each cycle. Rest, gentle warmth over the lower abdomen, fluids, and light movement may help. Use pain medicine only if it is suitable for you and follow the label directions; a pharmacist can check interactions or health-related cautions.

Arrange prompt medical advice for pain that is severe, worsening, repeatedly interrupts daily activities, lasts beyond the expected episode, or occurs with vomiting, fever, unusual bleeding, pain when passing urine, or a missed period. Seek urgent help for sudden intense pain, fainting, marked weakness, a rigid abdomen, or possible pregnancy with pain or bleeding.
