Ovulation and rectal pain

The ovaries, uterus, bowel, and rectum sit close together, so pain from an ovary can be felt deep in the pelvis or at the back passage. Mid-cycle pain may be a short-lived ache, pressure, or cramp on one side. Rectal pain during bowel movements, pain with sex, painful periods, or symptoms that repeat beyond ovulation can occur with Endometriosis. An Ovarian Cyst can also cause pelvic pressure or pain.

Keep a diary of cycle day, pain location, bowel movements, bleeding, discharge, and urinary symptoms. Rest, gentle heat, and avoiding activities that worsen the pain may help. Do not insert anything into the rectum to investigate the pain. Book an assessment if the symptom repeats, changes your bowel habits, or affects work, sleep, sex, or exercise.

Seek urgent care for sudden severe pelvic or rectal pain, fainting, fever, repeated vomiting, heavy vaginal bleeding, black or bloody stool, or inability to pass stool or urine. Arrange prompt medical review for new rectal bleeding, a pelvic lump or swelling, pain during pregnancy, or pain that is steadily worsening. A clinician can distinguish ovulation discomfort from bowel, pelvic, or ovarian problems.
