It will not treat every itchy rash, and it can mask or worsen some infections.

Topical steroids reduce local inflammation, redness, and itching. They may be considered for some forms of eczema, contact dermatitis, heat rash, or other inflammatory conditions, depending on the body site and severity. Thin facial skin, skin folds, genitals, broken skin, and areas near the eyes need extra caution. Repeated or prolonged use can cause skin thinning, visible small blood vessels, colour changes, acne-like eruptions, or rebound irritation.

Check the active ingredient and strength, follow the label, and apply a thin layer only to the affected skin. Avoid covering the area tightly unless instructed. Do not use a steroid alone on a ring-shaped, oozing, or rapidly spreading rash without medical advice. Moisturiser can support the skin barrier, while persistent or recurrent symptoms deserve an assessment.

Seek medical advice for a rash involving the eyes or mouth, widespread blistering, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, fever, pus, or rapidly worsening pain. Arrange review when the rash does not improve as directed, returns quickly, or appears after a new medicine.

Ask what diagnosis is being treated, which strength and body sites are appropriate, how long to use it, whether an infection must be ruled out, and how to taper or stop if symptoms return.
