Over-the-counter remedies for pink eye: what to know

Pink eye, also called [Conjunctivitis](/conditions/conjunctivitis/), can cause redness, watering, itching, irritation or sticky discharge. It may be linked to a virus, bacteria, allergy or an irritant, and these causes are not treated in the same way. Avoid sharing towels, touching the eye and using another person’s drops. Contact lenses can increase irritation and should be removed until an eye professional says they are suitable again.

Wash your hands before and after touching the eye. A clean cool compress may ease irritation, while preservative-free lubricating drops can help dryness when a pharmacist confirms they are suitable. Gently clean discharge with clean water and a fresh pad for each wipe. Do not use someone else’s drops, old opened products or steroid eye drops without medical direction.
