Over the counter medicine for rashes

A rash can reflect irritation, allergy, infection, heat, or a medicine reaction. A rash with hoarse voice, facial swelling, or breathing difficulty may signal a severe allergic reaction. A rash is not a diagnosis by itself, and a product that helps dry skin may worsen an infection or inflamed skin.

Use gentle, fragrance-free cleansing, pat the skin dry, and apply a plain moisturiser if the skin is dry. A pharmacist can advise whether an antihistamine or a short course of a suitable topical product fits the rash. Do not apply steroid creams to broken skin, around the eyes, or to a possibly infected area without advice, and stop any new product that worsens symptoms.

Seek urgent help for swelling of the mouth or throat, breathing trouble, faintness, blistering, skin peeling, or a rash involving the eyes. Arrange prompt assessment for fever, severe pain, pus, rapidly spreading redness, or a rash after starting a new medicine. Persistent hoarseness or a recurring rash also deserves review rather than repeated self-treatment.
