Over-the-counter medicine for perioral dermatitis

Perioral dermatitis causes small red bumps, dryness, burning, or sensitivity around the mouth; it can also affect the nose or eyes. It may resemble pimples, but acne products can irritate the area. Topical corticosteroids are a frequent aggravating factor, and stopping them can temporarily make the rash look worse before it settles.

Because facial skin is sensitive, adding several non-prescription products can prolong irritation. A clinician may consider topical antibiotic therapy or oral antibiotics for acne-type treatment when the diagnosis is confirmed.

Keep the routine simple: wash with lukewarm water or a mild fragrance-free cleanser, pat dry, and avoid scrubs, fragranced creams, heavy occlusive balms, and fragranced toothpaste if they seem to trigger burning. Do not squeeze the bumps.

Do not restart or stop a prescribed steroid abruptly without contacting the prescriber; the plan may depend on the product and how long it has been used. Take a photograph when the rash is active and bring a list of cosmetics, skincare, inhalers, and medicines.

Arrange a dermatology or primary-care review if bumps persist, spread toward the eyes, recur after treatment, or interfere with eating, sleep, or comfort. Prompt care is sensible when the skin becomes increasingly painful, crusted, or oozing.

Seek urgent help for eye pain, vision change, marked eyelid swelling, facial swelling, or breathing trouble. These features are not typical simple irritation and need direct assessment.

Ask whether the pattern is perioral dermatitis rather than acne, rosacea, or contact dermatitis; which products to pause; and whether a taper is needed for a steroid. Ask how long treatment may take and what to do if symptoms flare after a change.
