Over-the-counter treatment for a stye

A stye is a tender, localised swelling near an eyelash or within an eyelid gland. It can cause a sore lump, watering, crusting, or mild redness. The swelling often improves with time, but rubbing, squeezing, or sharing towels can irritate the eyelid and spread germs.

Over-the-counter eye products do not all treat the same problem. Lubricating drops may soothe irritation, while antibiotic drops or ointments are not appropriate for every stye and may require professional advice. Apply a clean, comfortably warm cloth to the closed eye for several minutes, repeating it through the day. Wash your hands before and after touching the eyelid, keep the area clean, and pause eye makeup and contact lenses until it settles. Do not pop the lump or place non-eye products around the eye.

Seek prompt medical advice for worsening swelling, spreading redness, marked pain, fever, reduced vision, light sensitivity, pain when moving the eye, or swelling that affects the whole eyelid. Arrange an assessment if the lump does not improve, keeps returning, or is not clearly on the eyelid edge.
