Ovary pain and ovulation

Around ovulation, a follicle releases an egg from an ovary. Stretching of the ovary or irritation from released fluid can produce a twinge, ache, or sharper sensation on one side. It may shift sides in different cycles and can occur with light spotting. Pain that is intense, lasts beyond the expected mid-cycle window, or keeps returning with bowel or sexual pain is less typical of simple ovulation pain. Ovarian cysts and endometriosis are possible alternatives.

Note the first day of your period, the suspected ovulation day, the pain’s location, and its duration. A warm bath or heating pad may ease mild cramps. Use medicines only as suitable for your health and pregnancy plans, checking with a pharmacist when unsure. Make a non-urgent appointment if the pain disrupts work, sleep, sex, or exercise, or if its pattern changes.

Get urgent care for sudden intense pain, fainting, severe weakness, fever, persistent vomiting, heavy vaginal bleeding, or a swollen and very tender abdomen. Do not wait for the next cycle when these symptoms appear.
