Ovarian cancer stomach pain: what to know

Ovarian cancer may produce a dull ache, pressure, cramping, or pain that becomes more noticeable with movement or after eating. Fluid in the abdomen can stretch tissues and create heaviness. Disease involving the abdominal lining can cause more widespread tenderness. The location and pattern do not reliably show whether pain is caused by cancer; bowel, urinary, muscular, and gynaecological conditions can feel similar.

Describe the timing, severity, location, triggers, and associated symptoms. This gives the clinician useful information while examination and testing establish the cause.

Book an assessment for pain that is new, recurring, persistent, or changing. Bring a list of medicines and note bowel movements, appetite, bloating, fever, bleeding, and urinary symptoms. A clinician may recommend examination, blood tests, or pelvic ultrasound. If ovarian cancer is confirmed, the team may discuss chemotherapy, surgery, or symptom-directed treatment according to the disease pattern.

Seek urgent medical advice for pain that is rapidly worsening, prevents sleep or movement, or occurs with fever, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, or inability to pass stool or gas. Emergency help is needed for sudden severe pain, fainting, heavy bleeding, vomiting blood, or black stools.
