What should you know about outside shin splints?

Short answer
Outside shin splints may reflect overloaded lower-leg tissues or altered gait, but focal bone pain, nerve symptoms, or worsening pain needs assessment for another cause.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why the outer shin can hurt
Classic shin splints often affect the inner border of the shin, so pain mainly on the outside should not be labelled automatically. Running, jumping, hills, hard surfaces, worn shoes, or a sudden training increase can overload muscles and their attachments. Flat Feet may alter leg and foot mechanics. Pain over one precise area of bone, pain at rest, or pain that steadily worsens raises concern for a bone stress injury rather than simple exercise soreness.
Managing the load
Stop or reduce the activity that brings on pain and switch temporarily to comfortable low-impact exercise. Review recent changes in distance, speed, hills, surfaces, and footwear. Supportive shoes may help, while Custom Orthotics are best considered after an assessment rather than chosen solely from symptoms. Physiotherapy can address strength and mobility; Gait Retraining may help when foot placement or running form increases load.
When to get checked
Seek urgent care for severe lower-leg pain with swelling or tightness, foot weakness, numbness, or a cold or pale foot. Arrange prompt review for pinpoint bone tenderness, pain during ordinary walking, night pain, or symptoms after a blow. Book an appointment if pain keeps returning, causes a limp, or does not improve after reducing impact.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether this fits Shin Pain from training load or whether another cause should be excluded. Ask if your gait, foot shape, shoes, strength, or running plan is contributing, and how to progress activity without provoking symptoms.
