What should you know about otoscope rechargeable handle?

The handle is the part held by the examiner. It powers the attached examination head and light, and a rechargeable design avoids changing disposable batteries during routine use. Charging performance can vary with the battery, charger and storage conditions. The handle does not improve a blocked view on its own, and it does not decide whether redness, fluid, wax or a bulging eardrum is clinically meaningful. Examination heads and specula must be compatible with the handle and kept clean. A clinician also needs to position the person and the ear carefully, particularly when examining a young child.

Follow the manufacturer’s charging and cleaning instructions, keep liquid away from electrical contacts, and check the handle and attached head for damage before use. Never share a used speculum between people. Do not place the instrument into an ear that is bleeding, very painful or recently operated on unless a clinician is directing the examination. Arrange urgent assessment for sudden hearing loss, severe pain, blood or pus from the ear, significant dizziness, facial weakness, or swelling around or behind the ear.
