Otoscope ophthalmoscope sets for medical students: what to know

An otoscope provides a lighted view through the ear canal and can also help inspect the nose or throat with the appropriate attachment. An ophthalmoscope directs focused light through the pupil to support an examination of the visible interior of the eye. A typical student set may include interchangeable heads, specula in different sizes, a handle, a case and a power source. The instrument improves illumination and magnification, but it does not replace training, a full history or a clinician’s assessment.

Learn the controls before examining anyone: check the light, select a clean attachment and keep the lens free of smears. Explain the examination, obtain consent and position the person comfortably. For an ear examination, use the correct size speculum and avoid forcing it into the canal. For an eye examination, reduce surrounding light when appropriate and ask the person to look at a fixed target. Clean reusable parts according to the manufacturer’s instructions; discard single-use items after use. Practise first with a tutor who can correct hand position, viewing angle and interpretation.

A device view is not a diagnosis. Arrange prompt clinical assessment for severe ear or eye pain, sudden change in vision, marked redness, injury, bleeding, discharge, a foreign body or symptoms that are rapidly worsening. Do not continue probing an ear that is very painful or obstructed. Children may need a dedicated child health assessment when examination is difficult or symptoms affect feeding, sleep or hearing.
