An mRNA vaccine delivers a short-lived message to some cells. Those cells make a harmless piece or signal associated with a germ, allowing the immune system to practise recognising it. The mRNA itself does not remain as a permanent part of the body and does not alter a person's DNA.

The immune response can cause a sore arm, tiredness, headache, muscle aches, chills, or a fever for a short time. These effects reflect immune activity and usually settle, but each vaccine has its own approved uses and precautions.

Tell the vaccinator about previous vaccine reactions, allergies, current illness, pregnancy, immune problems, and medicines. Keep the appointment record and follow the recommended schedule for the specific product. Rest, drink fluids, and use a suitable symptom reliever only if advised for you.
