What should you know about OTC local anaesthetics?

These products reduce nerve signalling in a small area, so pain, itching, or sensitivity may feel less noticeable for a while. Creams, gels, sprays, and patches may be intended for intact skin or a specific minor problem; the label determines where they belong. Numbness can make it harder to notice heat, pressure, or worsening tissue irritation.

A product bought without a prescription is not automatically suitable for every age, body area, wound, or medical history. Local anaesthetic used by clinicians is different from self-applied topical treatment and may be part of a cortisone injection, epidural steroid injection, facet joint injection, nerve root block, or sacroiliac joint injection.

Read the active ingredient, intended body area, directions, and maximum frequency before applying it. Use the smallest labelled amount on clean, intact skin, keep it away from eyes and mouth, and wash your hands afterwards. Do not cover the area unless the instructions specifically allow it, and do not combine several numbing products without a pharmacist or clinician checking the ingredients.

Stop if burning, swelling, blistering, rash, dizziness, unusual drowsiness, or worsening pain appears. Protect a numb area from hot water, heating pads, sharp edges, and accidental rubbing. If pain keeps returning, arrange an assessment rather than repeatedly masking it.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, facial swelling, fainting, seizure-like activity, severe confusion, or blue-grey lips after use. Get prompt medical advice for a deep wound, spreading redness, pus, fever, a significant burn, loss of movement, new weakness, or numbness that does not settle.

Ask which ingredient and formulation fit the affected area, whether it is safe with your medicines or allergies, how long to try it, and what symptom would mean you should stop. Ask whether the pain needs examination instead of topical numbing.
