What should you know about OTC antihistamines for rash?

Histamine contributes to itching and raised wheals in hives, so an antihistamine can reduce that sensation for some people. It is less likely to solve a rash caused by infection, irritation, heat, a medicine reaction, or a skin condition that needs a cream or other treatment. The appearance, location, timing, and associated symptoms help a clinician work out the cause. A rash itself does not establish an allergy diagnosis.

Check the label for the active ingredient, age guidance, dose, and warnings. Avoid taking more than directed or adding another product with the same ingredient. Drowsy antihistamines can impair driving and coordination; alcohol may worsen this effect. A cool compress, gentle unperfumed moisturiser, and avoiding a suspected irritant may reduce discomfort. Ask a pharmacist before giving it to a child or using it during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or with regular medicines. Do not scratch open areas, and keep a note of new foods, medicines, products, or exposures.

Get emergency help if the rash comes with swelling of the mouth or throat, breathing difficulty, collapse, or sudden severe illness. Seek prompt medical advice for blistering, skin peeling, painful purple spots, sores in the mouth or eyes, fever, or a rash that is rapidly spreading. Arrange a review if it persists, repeatedly returns, or starts after a new medicine.
