What should you know about OTC antacids for GERD?

Antacids work in the stomach by neutralising acid. They can be useful when burning or sour fluid appears occasionally, particularly after a meal. They do not repair irritation, prevent every reflux episode, or identify why reflux is happening. Some products also contain an alginate, which helps form a layer over stomach contents.

GERD, also called acid reflux disease, can cause heartburn, a cough or symptoms that disturb sleep. Chest tightness and abdominal pain have several possible causes, so do not assume they are reflux without considering the full pattern.

Use the product exactly as labelled and measure liquid doses carefully. Leave the recommended interval between an antacid and other medicines because some ingredients can change how medicines are absorbed. Ask a pharmacist to check the combination if you take regular treatment, have kidney problems, or are pregnant.

Avoid lying down soon after eating, notice foods or drinks that trigger symptoms, and consider smaller meals. If you need an antacid repeatedly, record the timing and response so a clinician can decide whether an acid-reducing treatment or assessment is more suitable.

Seek medical advice when symptoms are frequent, worsening, difficult to control, or affecting sleep or swallowing. Get urgent help for severe chest pressure, breathlessness, fainting, vomiting blood, black stools, persistent vomiting, or sudden severe abdominal pain.
