Osteosarcoma clinical features: what to know

Pain may be localised and become more intrusive over time. A lump or swelling can develop near the end of a long bone, and a nearby joint may feel stiff. A fracture through weakened bone can occur with limited force. Some people also notice reduced activity or difficulty with everyday tasks, while others have a lesion found during assessment of a different complaint.

These findings overlap with injury, infection, arthritis, benign bone growths, and other illnesses. Clinicians therefore combine the history and examination with X-ray and other imaging. If the appearance remains concerning, a planned biopsy can identify the tumour type.

Arrange assessment for bone pain or swelling that persists, returns, or interferes with sleep, walking, lifting, or another usual activity. Bring a list of symptoms, injuries, medicines, and previous scans. Avoid high-impact activity if movement causes sharp pain or if a clinician has warned that the bone may be fragile.

Seek prompt assessment for a new lump, increasing swelling, or pain that limits use of an arm or leg. Go to emergency care for sudden severe bone pain, a visible deformity, inability to bear weight, or loss of feeling or circulation below the affected area. Urgency is based on the symptom and possible complication, not on assuming its cause.
