Osteosarcoma bone scan: what to know

A small amount of tracer is given, and a camera records how the skeleton takes it up. Areas with increased activity may appear more prominent. This can help clinicians look for changes elsewhere in the skeleton and understand the distribution of bone activity.

Increased uptake is not specific to cancer. Healing after an injury, arthritis, infection, and other bone conditions can produce a similar pattern. A bone scan is interpreted alongside your symptoms, examination, X-rays, CT or magnetic resonance imaging, and any tissue sample. The scan helps answer a clinical question; it is not a stand-alone diagnosis.

Ask the imaging team how long the appointment will take and whether you should drink fluids or follow any local preparation instructions. Tell them about pregnancy, breastfeeding, medicines, allergies, and difficulty lying still. After the scan, follow the department's instructions about fluids and contact with other people.

When results are discussed, ask which finding led to the next step and whether the abnormal area matches the known bone lesion. Contact the clinical team promptly if pain suddenly worsens, a limb becomes difficult to use, or a new injury causes severe pain. Seek urgent help for a suspected fracture, new weakness, or a hand or foot that becomes cold, pale, or numb. A scan appointment should not delay care for a rapidly changing symptom.
