Osteoporosis and psoriatic arthritis: what to know

Short answer
Osteoporosis weakens bone, while psoriatic arthritis inflames joints and nearby tissues; a person can have both conditions.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Bone problem
- Osteoporosis reduces bone strength.
- Joint problem
- Psoriatic arthritis causes inflammation.
- Useful assessment
- Review symptoms, medicines, strength, and fracture risk.
What the two conditions mean
Osteoporosis often develops quietly until a fall or ordinary movement causes a fracture. Psoriatic arthritis is an inflammatory condition associated with psoriasis and may cause joint pain, swelling, or morning stiffness. These problems can overlap, but joint symptoms do not by themselves show that bone density is low.
Reduced activity during painful flares can affect strength, balance, and confidence. Some medicines and other health conditions may also influence bone health, so a clinician should review the whole treatment plan rather than stopping prescribed medicine independently.
What you can do
Arrange an assessment if you have psoriasis with persistent joint symptoms, a fracture after a minor impact, or risk factors for bone loss. A clinician may consider a bone health assessment, review medicines, and plan safe strength and balance work.
Keep joints moving within comfortable limits. Physiotherapy can adapt exercises for painful or swollen joints, while anti-inflammatory medication may be discussed when inflammation is driving symptoms. Nutrition, fall prevention, and taking prescribed treatment consistently also support safer movement.
When to seek care
Seek prompt medical help after a fall with severe hip or back pain, inability to bear weight, a visible deformity, or new weakness or numbness. Contact a clinician soon for persistent joint swelling, marked morning stiffness, or pain that is limiting sleep and daily tasks.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms fit psoriatic arthritis, whether your bone health needs assessment, and which exercises are suitable during a flare. Discuss medicine effects, fracture prevention, and how progress will be checked.

Questions people ask
Can psoriatic arthritis cause osteoporosis?
The conditions are different, but inflammation, reduced activity, medicines, and other risk factors can affect bone health. Ask your clinician whether assessment is appropriate.
Should joint pain be treated like osteoporosis?
No. Joint pain needs assessment for its cause, while osteoporosis is evaluated through bone health and fracture risk. Both may need attention when they occur together.
