Osteomyelitis in the shoulder

The infection may involve the upper arm bone, shoulder blade, or collarbone, and it can irritate nearby muscles or the shoulder joint. Pain may be present at rest and may make lifting the arm difficult, but these symptoms can also occur with tendon, joint, or soft-tissue problems. Recent shoulder surgery, an open injury, bloodstream infection, or a wound near the collarbone can provide a route to bone. Examination and imaging help locate the problem; blood tests and a sample may help identify the organism.

Arrange medical review rather than repeatedly exercising through unexplained deep shoulder pain. Bring details of operations, injections, injuries, skin breaks, fever, and current medicines. The clinician may assess arm movement, skin, circulation, and nerve function, then choose imaging or sampling. Rest the shoulder from heavy lifting until advised, while keeping gentle movement only within the limits given after examination.

Seek prompt care for shoulder pain with fever, increasing swelling, redness, pus, or a surgical wound that begins draining. Get urgent help if pain escalates quickly, the arm becomes weak or numb, you feel faint or confused, or you are unable to move the arm because of severe pain.
