What should you know about osteomyelitis face symptoms?

Symptoms depend on the involved facial bone and the source of infection. A person may notice persistent, localised pain, tenderness, swelling, redness, warmth, fever, bad-tasting drainage or a wound that remains open. Infection near the jaw can occur alongside a dental problem; infection near the nose or cheek may follow nearby skin or sinus disease. Facial swelling has many possible causes, so these symptoms do not by themselves establish osteomyelitis.

Contact a doctor, dentist or urgent care service promptly for ongoing facial bone pain, swelling, fever or drainage. The assessment may include examination of the skin, mouth, teeth and nerves, blood tests, imaging and a specimen when drainage is present. Do not squeeze a swollen area or use leftover antibiotics. Keep any wound clean as advised, follow prescribed treatment, and attend follow-up even if discomfort improves. Bone Grafting may be discussed only when infection-related bone damage requires reconstruction.

Go to emergency care for swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, new vision changes, inability to open the mouth, severe headache, confusion, faintness, rapidly worsening swelling or fever with shaking chills. New facial weakness or numbness is also urgent because infection or swelling may be affecting nearby nerves.

Ask what area appears infected, whether a tooth or sinus problem is involved, which scan is appropriate, whether a culture is needed, and how treatment will protect the jaw, eye or nearby nerves. Confirm the warning signs that require immediate review.
