What should you know about osteoblastic osteosarcoma?

Short answer

Osteoblastic osteosarcoma is a bone cancer in which tumour cells produce osteoid, an immature form of bone, within the tumour.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the term describes

Osteosarcoma begins in bone-forming tissue. The osteoblastic type is named for the prominent production of osteoid by malignant cells. It most often develops in a limb near a major joint, although other bones can be involved. Persistent local pain, swelling or a firm lump may occur, and symptoms can be mistaken for a sports injury.

Imaging helps show the tumour's position, size and relationship to nearby structures. A biopsy examines tissue under a microscope and confirms the diagnosis. The specialist team also checks whether disease is present elsewhere before agreeing a treatment plan.

Treatment planning

Treatment commonly involves chemotherapy and surgery planned by a specialist sarcoma team. Chemotherapy may be used before surgery to treat cancer cells throughout the body and help assess how the tumour responds. Tumour removal surgery aims to remove the tumour with a margin of healthy tissue while preserving function when possible.

Protect the painful area from impact until the team advises otherwise. Keep appointments for scans, blood tests and treatment reviews. Tell the team about fever, worsening pain, numbness, a new change in movement or side effects from medicines.

When to seek care quickly

Contact the specialist team promptly for rapidly increasing swelling, pain that is not controlled, new weakness or difficulty moving the limb. Seek urgent help after a fall or sudden severe pain, because the affected bone may need immediate assessment for injury.

Questions for your doctor

Where is the tumour and has it been staged? What will the biopsy show? What is the sequence of chemotherapy and surgery? How might treatment affect movement, school, work or sport? Which symptoms during treatment need an urgent call?

Questions people ask

Is osteoblastic osteosarcoma the same as ordinary bone growth?

No. It is a malignant bone tumour whose cells produce abnormal osteoid, and it requires specialist assessment.

Why might chemotherapy be given before surgery?

It can treat cancer cells beyond the visible tumour and give the team information about how the tumour responds before surgery.
