What should you know about osteoblastic metastases prostate cancer?

Prostate cancer cells can travel from the prostate to bone. At a new site, they may alter the normal balance between bone breakdown and repair. Imaging may then show denser or hardened areas, but denser bone is not necessarily stronger bone. Pain, stiffness or reduced movement can occur, while some people have no bone symptoms when the finding is discovered.

The spine, pelvis, ribs and other bones may be assessed with scans chosen by the oncology team. The result is interpreted alongside examination, symptoms and other prostate-cancer information; a scan appearance alone does not decide the whole treatment plan.

Management may combine treatment directed at prostate cancer with care aimed at bone disease and symptoms. Options can include hormone-based treatment, medicines that strengthen bone, radiotherapy to a painful or threatened area, or a targeted radioisotope treatment for selected situations. Your team may also review calcium and vitamin D intake, dental health and fall risk.

Tell the team where pain occurs, whether it is worse at night or with movement, and whether walking or daily tasks have changed. Do not start supplements or strenuous exercise without checking, particularly if a scan shows a vulnerable bone.

Seek urgent medical help for new leg weakness, numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or severe back pain, because pressure around the spinal cord needs rapid assessment. Contact your oncology team promptly for sudden severe bone pain, inability to bear weight, a new fall, or difficulty passing urine.
