What should you know about ORS for dehydration?

Short answer
ORS helps dehydration by supplying water and electrolytes in a combination the intestine can absorb, especially after fluid loss.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What ORS does
Dehydration happens when the body loses more fluid than it replaces. ORS contains water, glucose, and salts in measured proportions; the intestine absorbs these together and helps restore circulating fluid. It can be useful after vomiting or diarrhoea, heavy sweating, or Heat Exhaustion, but it does not cure the underlying cause. Dehydration may also occur with Gastroenteritis, a Urinary Tract Infection, or conditions that limit drinking. Dark urine, Cloudy Urine, dizziness, dry mouth, headache, and reduced urination can provide clues, although symptoms need context.
How to take ORS
Use a packaged ORS product and follow its mixing directions precisely. Use safe water, measure the volume carefully, and sip slowly and often. If vomiting occurs, pause briefly and restart with smaller sips when able. Do not make the solution stronger, dilute it beyond instructions, or add extra sugar or salt. Continue appropriate food and breastfeeds if tolerated. People with kidney disease, heart failure, severe illness, or fluid restrictions should ask a clinician or pharmacist for personalised advice. Plain water may not replace salts adequately after substantial losses.
When to get urgent help
Get urgent medical care for confusion, fainting, extreme drowsiness, severe weakness, very little or no urine, rapid breathing, inability to keep fluids down, or worsening dizziness on standing. Seek prompt review for dehydration with severe abdominal or flank pain, fever, or blood in vomit or stool. Symptoms after prolonged heat exposure can become serious quickly. Constipation, dark urine, or cloudy urine that persists also deserves assessment when fluid intake has improved.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether ORS is suitable for the suspected cause, how much and how often to drink, and what personal conditions affect the plan. Confirm when home treatment is no longer enough and whether urine tests, blood tests, or treatment for the underlying illness are needed.

Questions people ask
Is ORS only for diarrhoea?
No. It can support fluid replacement after vomiting, heavy sweating, or heat-related fluid loss, provided the person can drink and has no relevant fluid restriction.
What if I vomit after drinking ORS?
After a short pause, try smaller and more frequent sips. Repeated vomiting or worsening dehydration requires medical assessment.
