What should you know about organism causing cholera?

After being swallowed, the bacteria can produce a toxin in the intestine. That toxin drives water and salts into the bowel, leading to sudden, profuse watery stools and sometimes vomiting. Cholera presents with diarrhoea, but diarrhoea has many other causes; symptoms and travel or exposure history need clinical interpretation. The immediate danger is rapid fluid loss, rather than the name of the organism alone.

Begin replacing fluids promptly with correctly prepared oral rehydration solution if the person is awake and able to drink. Use safe water, wash hands with soap, and avoid preparing food for others while symptoms continue. Seek medical advice promptly after possible exposure, particularly after travel or when others in the household are unwell. Testing can help distinguish cholera from other causes of acute diarrhoea; antibiotics, when used, are selected by a clinician.

Get emergency help for fainting, confusion, marked drowsiness, very little urine, an inability to drink, repeated vomiting, extreme weakness, or signs of severe dehydration. Young children, older adults, pregnant people, and people with health conditions can become unwell quickly from fluid loss. Intravenous fluids may be needed when oral replacement cannot keep pace with losses.

Ask whether testing is needed, how to mix and give rehydration solution, which warning signs apply to the person being treated, and how to reduce transmission at home. Mention recent travel, food and water exposures, and anyone else with similar symptoms.
