What should you know about orfit splinting material?

A clinician warms the sheet so it can be shaped around the body, then allows it to cool into a supportive form. The finished splint may hold a joint in a chosen position, reduce unwanted movement, or protect healing tissue while still allowing planned movement elsewhere. Its firmness, thickness, ventilation, and edge shape affect comfort and control.

A custom splint is different from a cast: it may be removable when the treatment plan allows, while a cast is generally designed for more continuous immobilisation. The right design depends on the diagnosis, swelling, skin condition, and whether movement is helpful.

Follow the wearing schedule and keep the material away from direct heat that could deform it. Check the skin each time you remove it, especially around edges and pressure points. Keep the splint dry unless your clinician says it can be washed, and do not trim or reshape it yourself. Gentle exercises may be prescribed for uncovered joints to limit stiffness.

Contact the treating team if fingers become persistently numb, pale, blue, unusually cold, or markedly swollen, or if the splint causes a blister or worsening pressure pain. Seek urgent help for severe pain after an injury, a new deformity, or loss of movement. A splint that becomes loose or cracks may no longer protect the area properly.
