What should you know about ordinary products for blackheads?

A blackhead is an open comedone: oil and shed skin cells plug a pore, and the exposed material darkens when it reacts with air. The colour is not simply surface dirt. Blackheads commonly appear on the nose, forehead, chin, chest or back. They can occur with acne or comedonal acne, but a few blackheads do not by themselves establish an acne diagnosis. Similar-looking dots may also be normal sebaceous filaments.

Cleanse gently, choose non-comedogenic moisturiser and introduce one active product at a time. Salicylic acid can help clear material within pores; topical retinoids can reduce formation of new comedones but may initially cause dryness or irritation. Apply as directed rather than scrubbing harder, and moisturise around treatment. Do not squeeze with nails or use harsh pore strips repeatedly. A trained clinician can discuss an acne extraction facial when individual lesions need removal. Isotretinoin treatment is reserved for selected acne patterns and requires medical supervision.

Book a dermatology review if lesions are painful, deep, scar-forming, widespread or accompanied by inflamed spots that are not settling. Seek advice when an over-the-counter routine causes persistent swelling, crusting or burning, or when the diagnosis is uncertain. Earlier assessment can help prevent picking and reduce the chance of lasting marks.
