Short answer

Large pores are usually a cosmetic concern shaped by oil, genetics, skin texture and sun exposure, and they can often look less noticeable with consistent care.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What large pores can mean

Pores are openings around hair follicles and oil glands. They may look more visible when oil, dead skin or comedones collect at the opening. Pore size also varies naturally across the face, often appearing more prominent around the nose, cheeks and forehead. Sun damage can reduce supporting collagen and make the skin surface look less even. Large pores can occur alongside acne, but their presence does not establish that acne is present.

Ways to make pores look less noticeable

Use a gentle cleanser and avoid scrubbing, squeezing or frequent pore-stripping products, which can irritate the surface. A clinician may suggest a topical retinoid to help keep follicles clear and support smoother texture. Daily broad-spectrum sun protection helps limit further texture change. If a stronger texture-focused approach is appropriate, microneedling may be discussed after an assessment of active acne, sensitivity and skin type. Results require maintenance because pores remain normal skin structures.

When to seek care

Arrange a dermatology review if enlarged-looking pores appear with persistent blackheads, inflamed spots, painful cysts, scarring, sudden texture change or ongoing irritation. A clinician can distinguish congestion from acne or sun-related texture change and select treatment that fits your skin. Seek prompt care for rapidly changing lesions, bleeding or a sore that does not heal.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether oiliness, acne, irritation or sun damage is contributing to the appearance; which cleanser and retinoid strength suit your skin; and whether microneedling is appropriate if you have active breakouts or a tendency to develop dark marks.

Questions people ask

Can large pores be closed?

Pores cannot be permanently closed, but reducing congestion and improving surrounding texture can make them look less prominent.

Does squeezing make pores smaller?

Squeezing can irritate skin and increase inflammation, so it is better to use gentle cleansing and clinician-guided treatment.
