Short answer

During gastroenteritis, oral rehydration solution replaces water and salts lost through diarrhoea or vomiting.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main aim
Replace fluid and electrolytes
Best approach
Small, frequent sips
Monitor
Urination, drinking, vomiting, and stools

Why rehydration matters

Gastroenteritis can cause repeated loose stools, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fever, and reduced appetite. These symptoms can remove more fluid than a person manages to drink. An ORS mixture contains measured electrolytes and glucose, helping the intestine take up fluid while the illness settles.

ORS does not kill every infection and does not stop diarrhoea immediately. Rotavirus infection is one possible cause, while other infections and non-infectious triggers are also possible. The priority is replacing ongoing losses and watching for dehydration.

Practical steps at home

Prepare the solution exactly as the packet says, using safe water and a clean container. Offer small, frequent sips rather than a large drink. If vomiting follows, wait a short while and restart with slower sips. Continue breastfeeding and offer usual foods in small portions as tolerated.

Avoid mixing ORS with juice, soft drinks, or extra salt or sugar. Keep track of drinking, urination, vomiting, and stool frequency; this gives a clinician useful information if symptoms continue.

When to seek care

Get urgent medical help for marked drowsiness, confusion, fainting, severe weakness, inability to drink, repeated vomiting, very little urine, blood in stool or vomit, or breathing difficulty. Seek prompt advice for a baby, an older person, pregnancy, or a person with a condition that affects fluid balance.

Questions to ask

Ask how much solution to offer, how to continue feeds, what duration of diarrhoea or vomiting requires review, and whether medicines should be avoided or prescribed.
