Early-stage oral melanoma: what to know

Stage describes where melanoma is found, how deeply it extends, and whether tests show spread. Early-stage wording is based on available examination, biopsy information, and imaging; it is not a visual diagnosis. A lesion may be small yet still need careful assessment because mouth tissues are delicate and pigment can hide irregular borders. The pathology report helps identify the tumour type and features that guide the care team.

Follow the referral pathway to an oral medicine, head and neck, dermatology, or oncology team. Bring medication details and any photographs showing change. A biopsy confirms the diagnosis, while imaging and selected lymph-node assessment help complete staging. Immunotherapy may be considered in particular situations based on pathology and staging.

Contact the treating team promptly if a lesion grows, bleeds, ulcerates, becomes painful, or causes trouble with chewing, speech, or swallowing. Breathing difficulty, rapidly increasing mouth swelling, or uncontrolled bleeding requires urgent medical attention. Early-stage wording should never be used to postpone an appointment or treatment discussion.
