What should you know about oral ferrous iron salts?

Short answer

Oral ferrous iron salts replace iron used to make healthy red blood cells, but they must be taken as prescribed and monitored.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it means

Ferrous salts are oral iron medicines used when iron stores are low or iron-deficiency anaemia has been identified. The body uses iron to produce haemoglobin, which carries oxygen in red blood cells. Treatment addresses the shortage, while the reason for low iron may still need investigation.

Dark stools, constipation, nausea, abdominal discomfort, or diarrhoea can happen. These effects do not prove that the treatment is working or failing. Liquid preparations may stain teeth, and accidental swallowing of an excess can be dangerous, especially for children.

What to do

Use the product and schedule supplied by your clinician or pharmacist. Swallow tablets as directed with water; ask about food timing if stomach upset occurs. Tea, coffee, calcium products, and some medicines can reduce absorption, so check how to separate them from iron.

Keep iron securely away from children. Do not double a missed dose unless a pharmacist or prescriber tells you to. Attend any planned blood tests so the response and continued need for treatment can be reviewed.

When to seek care

Contact a clinician about severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, faintness, an allergic reaction, or side effects that prevent you taking the medicine. Treat a child’s accidental ingestion as urgent and contact emergency services or poison advice immediately.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what caused the iron deficiency, how to take your particular salt, which medicines need spacing, when blood tests are due, and what plan applies if constipation or nausea becomes difficult.

Questions people ask

Should I stop because my stools are dark?

Dark stools can occur with oral iron, but seek advice if they are tar-like, accompanied by bleeding, or associated with feeling unwell.

Can I take iron with tea?

Tea can reduce absorption, so ask your pharmacist how long to leave between tea and your iron dose.
