What should you know about oral dissolvable stitches?

These sutures may be placed after a tooth extraction, gum procedure, or repair inside the cheek, lip, or tongue. A loose end can feel sharp against the tongue as the tissue closes. The material and healing time vary, so a visible thread does not automatically mean the wound has opened.

Mild tenderness, swelling, and a small amount of blood staining can occur early after the procedure. The stitch supports the edges while the mouth heals; it does not prevent infection by itself.

Follow the clinician’s wound-care instructions. Avoid pulling, cutting, or repeatedly touching the thread. Keep the area clean as advised, choose softer foods if chewing is uncomfortable, and avoid smoking while the wound is healing. Do not rinse forcefully immediately after surgery unless instructed.

If a stitch catches on food or falls out, contact the treating dental or medical team for advice rather than trying to replace it. Use only recommended pain relief and mention medicines that affect bleeding before taking additional products.

Seek prompt review for bleeding that does not settle with firm pressure, increasing facial swelling, pus, fever, worsening pain, a bad taste with swelling, or difficulty swallowing or breathing. Emergency help is needed for breathing difficulty or rapidly expanding swelling.

Ask which type of suture was used, how to clean the site, what to do if it loosens, when the wound should be checked, and whether your tetanus protection needs attention for the original injury.
