Oral antibiotics for perioral dermatitis

Perioral dermatitis often appears as small red or skin-coloured bumps, dryness, burning, or sensitivity around the mouth. It can also involve the nose or eyes. It may resemble pimples, but acne and perioral dermatitis need different treatment decisions. An oral antibiotic can reduce inflammation in selected cases; its use is not proof that the rash is caused by a bacterial infection.

The clinician will consider the distribution of the rash, recent skincare, inhaled or nasal medicines, and any steroid cream used on the face. Improvement may take time, and irritation can continue if a triggering product is not addressed.

Follow the prescribed schedule and tell the prescriber about pregnancy, breastfeeding, allergies, stomach conditions, and other medicines. Use a simple, fragrance-free routine and avoid scrubs, picking, heavy occlusive products, and new actives while the skin is reactive. Ask before changing facial steroid treatment: stopping suddenly or continuing without guidance may both need a tailored plan.

A clinician may consider topical antibiotic therapy or another approach depending on the rash. Do not borrow acne antibiotics or combine treatments without instructions, because extra products can increase irritation and make the response harder to judge.

Contact the prescriber for worsening burning, spreading rash, severe diarrhoea, or a new widespread rash after starting medicine. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the lips, tongue, or face. Arrange review if the eyes become painful, light-sensitive, or inflamed, or if the rash is affecting eating, sleep, or confidence.
